Walt asked me to include pictures of some of the work I have done on NUF. These are in no way comprehensive, and it wasn't 'till I looked back that I realised that if I'd known........

As found in Carmichaels yard. With more water in the footwells than in the tank. Whatever possessed me?

Cynthia said "If you want it have it", then bought it for me as a Christmas present!!

The best bit was probably this 6x6 conversion. Which carmichaels kept for Shoreham's new machine!

I shall never forget that drive home on a cold winters night, with no heater or demister!

Then just when I thought it couldn't get much worse; it got worse. Melted snow everywhere. I really needed a bigger garage.

One of the Elephants Ears rear view mirrors. These were added quite early in its life, but were totally impractical. I swopped them for a pair of Defender mirrors.

The interior not long after I bought it. The seats were my addition, but notice the bowl to catch the worst of the leaks!

These are the foam proportioning system operating valves whose installation caused the side panel to bulge so much the seat wouldn't go back. The chart is for foam compound percentages.

None of the door locks worked, which was not surprising as all the bits were missing. This was one of the brackets I fabricated in order to get them working.

A priority was to have a look at the brakes. Here I must mention all the valuable help I received from Peter Brown of AGF 4x4, Kidderminster, who actually did a lot of work on Land Rovers for Carmichaels.

The main drain valve had to come off as it was completely clogged with rubbish from the tank. The tell-tale pipe to the level indicator was on and off many times before I cured the drip.

The crash bar was beginning to rot at the bottom, so off it came for some repairs and a repaint, from its original black to post office red. Here it is after repair in red oxide primer.

Time to fix that heater. This wasn't the only time the dashboard came out, but on this occassion I shot myself in the foot by kinking one of the heater pipes.

So the heater had to come out for repair and refurbishment. here it is on the workbench with the matrix partly out. This was the best job I did, warm feet and a clear screen - bliss!

We had had the machine for some time before I tested the pump. The pink hat and yellow wellies are not regulation issue. Cynthia was doing some gardening when I asked "Can you just hold this a minute?"

..a coat of original light aircraft grey paint.

The rack was built from an old table top, based on a design seen at Old Warden Airfield.

Stuffed with a bit of kit it at last looked like it might belong to a useful fire appliance.

Although the vehicle had been repainted red, from its original yellow, the cheap spay job had missed quite a few bits. So I decided that it would look better all the same colour and painted round the door shuts and door posts.

Quite a few cans of spray paint went into this.

As the old exhaust was beginning to drop apart I decided a new one was in order. I could have done this myself, but an offer from someone I knew who worked in a local exhaust centre seemed too good to miss. If only I'd known!

If you've never had yours up on a ramp this is what they look like from underneath.

And this is where they dropped it off the ramp, crushing one of their employees in the process! He made a full recovery, but I don't know that NUF ever did.

The door being repaired following the ramp incident. They did buy me a new door, but this was the cheaper (easier?) option.

Oh yes. And then we had the interesting 'broken diff on the motorway' saga. Another time when 4 wheel drive is useful to get you home with one axle out of action.

Sorting out the electrics was a complete nightmare. This sight of the dash out was very common for many months on and off while I got it sorted.

I had had to repair one corner of the roof, where someone had driven it under a low bridge and ripped the cable reel out! So decided it needed a repaint there too.

So one sunny weekend it was given a good rub-down and a generous coat of this bright Signal Yellow paint. Very satisfying to see the transformation. Pity you had to stand on a ladder to appreciate it.

Sorting this little microswitch out in the rear locker was just one of a long list of cheery little jobs to keep one occupied over the long Summer evenings.

Tank cover removed, the hole in the centre of the tank lid is fitted with a wire mesh filter. Later TACRs don't have this, so was it the original filler spout? Whatever, it used to overflow from here when the tank was full.

The vehicle already had a rear filler connector, but Carmichaels had pinched the bit that went into the filler pipe. So here is my B&Q version. Filler pipe on the left and overflow on the right. Water still came over the top if filling too generously.

Next up the suspension bushes needed changing. Quite a straightforward job, if you have a big enough spanner.

Another mod NUF had been subjected to was a foam tank between the rear seats. It smelled and leaked, so It had to come out. Here you can see some of the damage caused to the intereior by the foam compound.

Fortunately the base of the original shelf was still intact, although the back wall needed a rubdown a coat of duck-egg-blue paint.

Whoever made the angle-iron frame intended it to last - It's still in my garage. The tank itself was made of some sort of plastic.

This is the (rusty) round-the-pump foam proportioning system, which had been grafted into the original pipework.

This is the rather nifty storage unit I built to replace the tank. Much more useful. The fact that it resembles an aircraft in side view was a happy coincidence.

Finally saved up enough money to have new sills fabricated. Rolled from thicker steel than the originals they are 'armour-plated'.

With the new sills fitted I thought the floors could do with some renovation. So two wire brushes and even more paint later.

The outside wasn't being totally neglected. This is the rather smart strobe bar acquired from someone who didn't want me to say where he got it from. Thanks Alan - Ooops!
Added earlier were the blue lights, spots and fogs on the crash bar.

I also experimented with an extending light mast, but Cynthia thought it looked like a dustbin on the roof. So I sold it.

Experimenting with the spare wheel carrier after the motorway blowout. Notice electrical connector plugged in for battery and engine heater and alternative NATO coupling.

This was the last job I undertook. Replacing the vacuum unit on the gearbox. On older Range Rovers this unit engages and disengages the diff lock. You owners of later models have it really easy!

This was a major landmark event for me. The day they came to take it away.

After several years of restoration and many memorable events NUF was on it's way to a new home and owner.

Alisdair sent this transport vehicle to convey NUF to a new era of possible front line service. I've seen it only once since then, still looking much as I left it. Of course I miss it, but when I look back on all the problems, would I do it again......?
