Land`s End Airport
Land's End Airport is located on a site between Little Kelynack and Brea Down - just south of the town of St. Just which is 7.5 miles west of Penzance in Cornwall.
Land`s End Airport is the most south westerly commercial airport on the British mainland.
The new airport which was completed in June 1937 consisted of a field with a 2,100 ft grass runway, a 4,080 sq ft hanger, a booking office, a fuel store and a basic aircraft servicing facility.
The inaugural flight from the airport took place on 15th September 1937 when four passengers and the pilot flew to St Mary`s Airport on the Isle of Scilly.
Today the airport and the resident airline "Skybus" are owned by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company (IOSSCO) based in Penzance. In July 2012 IOSSCO embarked on a multi million pound investment program at the airport anticipating an increase in demand following the loss of the Penzance helicopter service. Their investment included the construction of a new purpose built passenger terminal; a state of the art air traffic control tower; a new long stay car park and provisional plans for the laying of an all weather runway subject to additional funding. They also announced the acquisition of a fourth de Havilland Twin Otter aircraft for their Skybus fleet; and an additional six airport fire-fighters posts to comply with an upgrade to CAA category "3" airport fire-fighting and rescue requirements. These improvements were completed in 2013.
Up until 2014 the airport had four runways that were laid out on grass. With joint European Union funding secured the airports first all weather surface runway was laid in July 2014.
The Lands End Airport Fire & Rescue Service is fully compliant to CAA category 3 requirements. They have their own fire station, three fire-appliances and a small training ground. Fire-service personnel currently receive their training at "Gatwick Fire" the commercial fire-training arm of London Gatwick Airport.
