Roborough Airport - Plymouth
Plymouth Roborough Airport opened in 1925 and was a successful business for over 86 years.
In its history the airport was associated with a number of well known airlines and at one time had an impressive list of popular UK and Irish destinations. In the "21st" century the airport found itself well within the boundary of the City of Plymouth with few opportunities for expansion. Sadly in Summer 2011 due to the poor economic climate the current owners of the airport announced that they could
no-longer operate the business as a growing concern. The last scheduled flight took off in July 2011 and the airport closed at 2230 hours on Friday 23rd December 2011.
The council have agreed that in the short-term the land will be retained/designated as an airport; but for how long? Some land has already been sold off for housing and two hangars have been taken down. Sadly this is likely to be the final chapter in the airports 86 year history.
# The remaining assets of the airport including the four airport crash tenders were disposed of via an auction in July 2012.
