RAF Ascension Island
The Royal Air Force and the United States Air Force jointly run Wideawake Airfield on Ascension island (which is not open to commercial air traffic). For many years SERCO were the contractor providing the airfield fire-service and other support services to the Royal Air Force. In April 2012 this contract was up for renewal. SERCO for reasons not disclosed had announced that they would not be submitting a bid to supply these services for a further term.
This contract has now been awarded to IDL (Interserve Defence Limited) who have not previously provided an airfield fire-service or airfield support services to any other UK military air base.
The USAF and RAF have an interesting arrangement at the airfield; the RAF (IDL) provide the crash rescue and the USAF the fire fighting; at any aircraft incident!
